Hitchhikers Guide: 2017

We would like to thank everyone for their support for our third annual symposium! The symposium took place on May 10-11, 2017, on the campus of Purdue University. The 2017 symposium organizers were: Scott Jensen, Kristina Kesely, Aaron Krabill, Samantha Lee, Emma Lendy, Vatsal Purohit, Yvon Rugema, and faculty advisor Angeline Lyon.

We would also like to extend a thank you to Dr. Lorena Beese. Dr. Beese obtained her B.A from Oberlin college, with a focus on mathematics and biology. Following this, she performed her PhD work at Brandeis University, and her post doctoral work was done at Yale University under Dr. Thomas Steitz. Research in the Beese lab is focused on understanding fundamental biological processes in atomic detail. A multi-disciplinary strategy is employed using macromolecular X-ray crystallography to determine high resolution, three-dimensional images of proteins and appropriate complexes. The structural information is combined with biochemical, biophysical, genetic, and computational analyses to address questions central to cancer biology. In addition to generating basic biological insights, this approach may facilitate the development new therapeutic agents for the treatment cancer and other diseases.
